Disney Parks and Beyond - A Disney podcast for all things Disney

My Guide to Walt Disney World's Fast Pass + system

It's me again! That Florida Guy

It's been a while since my last blog which took off with over 400 views! so thank you all.

Now i thought it was about time i scratched my head and thought of another guide blog which would help you all. I was thinking for a while

Then it came to me!

Disney World's FAST PASS + system!!! (FP+)

My first year at Walt Disney World i missed out on so many rides and attractions simply because i knew nothing about the FP+ system.

If you use it correctly you can maximise your time in the park and wait in line for less.
The Best place to start is to explain what FP+ actually is.
Fast Pass+ is Disney's system so you don't have to wait in the "standby line" which is the normal queue. With the new Frozen ever after ride opening last week, the queue was over 300 minutes long!!! Imagine how many things you would miss waiting all that time!!!
You Booked a time to go on the ride before you get to the park, and then you simply turn up to the ride at the time slot, and enter the FP+ line instead of the standby line.
You can even use FP+  shows and character meets also. So if your child wants to meet a certain character which is popular, using FP+ will save time!

Fast Pass+

If you are lucky enough to stay on site at a Walt Disney World property, you have an advantage as you can book your chosen fast passes 60 days in advance before you even get to the park! how cool is that?
Don't worry if you are staying off site though! You can still book fast passes 30 days in advance, which is ample time to catch the best rides!
In one day you can start by fast passing up to 3 rides/shows/character meets. once you use all 3 you can then book another one. once you have used your 4th, you can book a 5th and so on and so on.
Walt Disney World has its own app available on Apple or android devices.
It's called MDE or My Disney Experience. It's such a great app with a host of features including booking dining reservations, park maps, show & parade times, adding members of your party & booking and amending fast passes.

Below is some screen shots of the MDE app. Unfortunately I'm not at 30 days yet so cant show you the fast pass screen but iv included some of what the app can do.

MDE home screen with My plans which, would show had i selected any

Park map view. you can zoom in to your chosen park

Zoomed into magic kingdom, showing wait times for all rides and attractions

Entertainment and times are listed here

Dining, with full menu's and prices and reservations

I could be here all day telling you the In's and outs of the MDE app. It's a great and powerful tool to help with your Disney vacation, but today this is all about fast pass+.

Fast Pass Tier's

Their are two parks inside Walt Disney World which operate a tier system. Meaning you can pick one ride or attraction  from the first tier, and 2 rides or attractions from the second.

The first park is Disney's Hollywood Studios. The Tier's are as follows.

Tier one:

  • Toy Story Midway Mania
  • Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster
  • Fantasmic!
  • Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage
  • The Great Movie Ride

Tier Two:

  • Tower of Terror*
  • Star Tours*
  • Voyage of the Little Mermaid*
  • For the First Time in Forever: A "Frozen" Sing-Along Celebration*
  • MuppetVision 3D
  • Disney Junior – Live on Stage
  • Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular!

The second park with the tier system is Disney's Epcot. The tier's are as follows.

Tier One:

  • Soarin’
  • Test Track
  • Frozen Ever After
  • IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth
  • Living with the Land

Tier Two:

  • Turtle Talk with Crush
  • Spaceship Earth
  • Character Spot
  • Disney & Pixar Short Film Festival
  • Journey into Imagination with Figment
  • The Seas with Nemo & Friends
  • Mission: Space

Timing of Fast Passes

Now you might think this all sounds great and are now eager to book your fast passes, but one thing you should take into account is timing.
You don't get punished if you miss your fast pass, but i can tell you now if you've booked it you wont want to miss it. Make sure you leave enough time to get to each fast pass as they could be at opposite ends of the park! These parks are not small, for example just one part of Epcot (the world showcase) from end to end is around 1.2 miles long, so make sure you stay hydrated.

Booking fast passes

Booking Fast Passes has never been easier with the MDE app, or even the MDE website!
Disney has recently changed the system In earlier days you would have to choose 3 and sometimes it didn't give you the options you wanted.
Now the new system lets you book 1 2 or 3 fast passes and once they have been used you can book a 4th like i mentioned earlier in this blog.

I hope this has been useful and not to long winded, iv tried to keep is as short as i can whilst giving you the important stuff. Of course i'v missed things and for more information you can go to the MDE website or app.
